Everybody is welcome

You do not need to be Sikh to come in. You do not need to know anything about the faith, and you do not need an invitation or an appointment. People of every religion and of no religion are welcome, and so are visitors who are simply curious.

There is no charge to enter, no collection taken from visitors, and no expectation that you give anything.

What to expect on your first visit

If you have never been inside a Gurdwara, here is what normally happens, so that nothing takes you by surprise. These are ordinary Sikh customs and they apply in every Gurdwara.

• Shoes come off before you enter the main hall. There is a place to leave them.
• Heads are covered inside, by everyone, men and women alike. A scarf or a bandana is fine, and head coverings are usually available if you do not have one.
• People sit on the floor in the main hall. Sitting on a chair at the side is fine if you cannot manage the floor.
• Alcohol and tobacco are not brought into a Gurdwara.
• You will be offered food. It is free, it is vegetarian, and it is offered to everyone. Please do take it.

If you are not sure what to do, follow what the person next to you is doing, or just ask. Nobody minds.

Bringing a group

Schools, community groups, faith groups and civic organisations are welcome to arrange a visit. We are glad to show people round, explain what a Gurdwara is, and answer questions over a meal. Please email us ahead of time so somebody is ready for you.
